Alcuni spunti su come cominciare a scrivere un... literary essay!

 Il tempo degli esami di maturità si avvicina e probabilmente vi starete chiedendo da dove cominciare a scrivere la tesina in inglese. Ho pensato di cominciare a scrivervi alcuni consigli pratici, ma ATTENZIONE: ciò che troverete qui sotto non vuole assolutamente trattare l'argomento in maniera esaustiva... vi lascio solamente alcune guidelines e alcuni spunti su... 

HOW TO WRITE A LITERARY ESSAY

1) Introductory paragraph:

Nel paragrafo iniziale provate a introdurre, in maniera semplice, le vostre opinioni su quel determinato argomento:

The theme of… recurs at several different points in this novel. Whether it is the most important theme, however, is open to question.

The main purpose of this essay is to present…

The first impression we receive of Hamlet is ambiguous. At first he seems quite …, but later it becomes clear he is really…

2) Examples in the text:

     Dopo aver affermato il vostro punto di vista, è bene fornire esempi nel testo per supportarlo.

     a. Facendo riferimento al testo, mostrate dove o quando accade ciò di cui state parlando:

Eveline is very reflective. For example, when she hears the bell, she immediately…

b. Fornite più di un esempio laddove possibile:

Again, it should be noted that when she hears…

c. Laddove possibile inserite citazioni dal testo a supporto del vostro punto di vista:

She is described by Joyce as ‘… and…’

d. Aggiungete un vostro commento personale:

All of this makes us see her as…

In my opinion…

There is no doubt that…

From my point of view…

It seems to me that…

3) Cover all your points in the same way:

     Quando avete finito con il primo punto, il più esaustivamente possibile, passate a quelli successivi nello stesso modo e seguite la stessa procedura. Per riuscire a legare i paragrafi tra loro, potete servirvi di espressioni del tipo:

Another aspect of Shakespeare’s character is shown in Scene 1, when…

However this is not the whole picture…

Similarly, In contrast to, In the same way, however, Again, For this reason, Clearly…

4) Write a concluding paragraph:

      In the end the theme of … certainly plays a central role in this play…

      Without a doubt, Unquestionably, For the reasons above,

      In light of the above, I believe that Shakespeare main message is …

Alcuni consigli pratici relativi alla stesura di un tema letterario:

• ·         Scrivete al presente e non al passato: Eveline is a complex character (was). She acts strangely (acted)… però ricordatevi sempre la –s alla terza persona singolare!!!

• ·         Lo stile deve essere alquanto formale e quindi sarebbe buona norma evitare le contrazioni, usare (moderatamente) la forma passiva così come le proposizioni relative per unire le idee tra loro (the period during which he lived was full of uncertainty).

·         Evitate di usare parole come things/something e preferite parole più specifiche come ad esempio problems, situations, solutions, subjects…
